Robust demand from a variety of different industries is driving growth in shipments of thermostats for hazardous areas, according to Orbis Research.

In their newly published Global Hazardous Location Thermostats Market Report, Orbis list some of the sectors placing increasing orders for hazardous area thermostats – ranging from pulp and paper mills, to grain elevators, to oil refineries and petrochemical plants.

Like many hazardous areas, some of these have a clear need for temperature control, for example in the petrochemicals sector where highly flammable vapours and fluids might be in regular use.

“Thermostats are the devices/components of a control system, which senses and maintains a system at a constant temperature by switching the devices on or off as and when needed,” the report states.

“Hazardous location thermostats are specially designed for hazardous location temperature control, i.e. it controls the heating, cooling, or ventilation systems with an adjustable knob for easy and convenient adjustments.”

In most hazardous area thermostats, the thermostat itself is protected against harsh conditions, for example by being placed in a flameproof enclosure.

The report estimates the global market for hazardous location thermostats was worth nearly $590 million in 2016, with compound annual growth of 7.69% forecasted to take it to $850 million by 2021.
